Electronic Voting Doohicky
I feel like a real American. I voted this morning. The polling station had about 20 paper-ballot booths, and a single electronic voting station that everyone seemed to ignore. Of course, a big reason for my not casting and absentee ballot was to see what the big hubbub was with these machines.
It took about 5 minutes to find someone who actually knew how to work the thing. Apparently the one attendant who was trained on it went on break. The machine looked very imposing, and about 50 times more complex than it had to be. Lots of flaps and hinges and things. Of course, if something is big and imposing and complicated; it must be safe, reliable and accurate!
Eventually we got the machine fired up, and I voted quickly and painlessly. I felt very productive and it wasn’t even 10am yet.
