The whole craving thing comes down to blood sugar fluctuations, at least in terms of carb and sugar cravings. Craving meat can come down to various things, like the need for iron in women. You can read a post I wrote regarding the ideas behind cravings. http://www.higher-endeavors.com/blog/2006/10/12/the-truth-on-cravings/

Hi Dan. I have listened to many of Paul's talks. I find them quite informative.

Gluten is a protein found in certain grains. However, keep in mind that not all grains have gluten. And also, that some people are more sensitive to gluten than others. Quinoa and Rice, for example, are both gluten free. Many other examples are out there. I think modern society has gone overboard on gluten-rich foods (processed flour and wheat-based products like pasta) which are causing many people to have issues.

Personally, I try to avoid gluten when I can, but do not completely exlcude it from my diet. Do some research about grains that are gluten free, and start eating them in-place of wheat based products once-and-a-while. For example, I get Quinoa pasta from Whole Food (bulk section). It tastes great, and is gluten free!

Also, your point sugars: all carbs break down into sugar. The issue is how fast. I find that eating any standard bread or pasta does ramp up my cravings. Instead of pasta, try to just cook the whole grains themselves. For example, cook some Quinoa, millet or barley instead. The extra fiber and other good stuff in the grains will help your body process the food in a more moderated way. You'll find that you'll get full faster, and the cravings will dissappear.

what is your thoughts on "whole grains" I had a chance to hear Paul Nison speak and read his Raw Life book and read all about grain creating glutten and all that and so many ppl say don't, especially since is turns to sugar? I find that eating a little bread starts the flood gates for the cravings, anyway, that is just me though. Great site in both diet and motivation.
