I need a helicopter

It took me 4 hours to get home today from work. It took me almost two hours to get to work (taking the bus). I live <15 miles from the office. This just isn't right!

  1. [...] For example, I love my work, but lately my commute has been quite a drag. It was really draining all my energy. Today, with no meetings, I just stayed home…..walked around town a bit, and got a ton of work done in a couple coffeeshops! It was great. I feel energized and was able to focus on what really mattered, and get enjoyment from it. Again, work wasn’t the issue, it was all the other stuff around it causing the trouble. [...]

  2. Given the problems of a long commute, I feel that sleeping under the desk at work between shifts has a lot to recommend it. Though this can be tricky, especially if you have any pets.

  3. Hey Rachel, good point. One problem (albeit a good one) is that I love my job :)

My lease ends in a month or so…will have to think about moving a little closer to the lab.

  4. Hey Alex, the bridge I drive over doesnt have a bike route….will take about an hour each way riding (+ change/shower time). I admit this would at least give me a workout…..but still wouldn’t be as nice as a helicppter :) . BTW, I checked out your site. It looks good, I just added your feed to my newsreader!

  5. You could always use a bicycle. Might take you 30-45 minutes, which is faster then what you have now, and you get exercise at the same time.

  6. Sorry – I meant “a job nearer to where you want to live”. Durrr.

  7. You’re right this isn’t right! But what else can you do? Can you rent somewhere near work during the week? Or can you get a different job nearer to where you want to work? Easier said than done I know.
