Dealing With Setbacks

with 16 comments

I’m dropping out of Ironman Coeur D Alene.

It’s a really tough thing to say and harder to write out. Many months of training are already in the bank. However, after attempting to ride and run over the past few days, my knee pain has returned in full force.

Walking is painful, biking is uncomfortable and running is impossible right now.

I am going to work with my coach to sort out the right racing plan for later in the summer and fall. For now, my number one priority is to get healthy and build strength and appropriate flexibility to keep my body that way.

The right thing to do is to allow 4-6wks for my knee to heal. I’ll be swimming up a storm in the meantime.

Below is a pic from the ferry as I type this post on the way to Whidbey Island.

  6. I have tried exercise, chiropractors, acupuncture, a million NSAIDs, and muscle relaxants. Nothing helps except for massage and very hot baths, sometimes with Tiger Balm (http://tigerbalm.50webs.com/English/index.htm) applied to the lumbar region and afterwards bed rest. It helps to ease up my muscles and for getting through the pain/minor injuries that sometimes happen.

  7. Ravi, I know you’ll work this challenge like all others, with grace and a valuable lesson you’ll share with your readers.
On a different note, I competed in my first sprint Triathlon Saturday. 1:16:48. I beat my soft goal of 1:20. I walked the Ravi walk and set a higher standard… for myself.

  8. I am share in your frustration at having to pull out this year. I am training for IM Cozumel and I know the time commitment and mental hurdles it takes to prepare.

    Get that entry transferred!

    Best of Energy to you.

  9. That’s must be frustrating but I feel it is the right decision. As Oliver said, powering through injury makes only things worse. The upside is that it will get better.
    Be well!

  10. Universe to Ravi: Be kind to yourself. :)

I have been going to Physical Therapy for a while to deal with a hip injury that had travelled into my knee, and I know what it’s like to not be able to do anything. I focus on the healing that’s taking place.

I’ve been getting ASTYM treatment, and it’s been wonderful! I had chronic brusitis in my right hip for over a year from a fall off a motor scooter in Thailand. After 1.5 months of treatment and no running, the brusitis is completely gone, and both my hip and knee feel much, much better!

Take the time to rest, and soon you’ll be as good as new. Trying to power through this could turn a relatively minor injury into a long term handicap. We are so focused on getting things done, competing with ourselves and the rest of the world. Maybe now is your time to rest, listen to your body, and look back on your incredible achievement of running with the Raramuri in Mexico. :)
    peace,

    • Thanks Oliver…you are right :)

What is ASTYM? Where do you get the treatment done?

  11. I know that was a difficult and disappointing decision for you to have to make. When you put all that effort into the planning and working up to it, it is just so hard to let go. I had an injury last year that put me out of 2 of my planned triathlons and I climbed Mt Rainier pretty tentatively, with an injury that I had to baby. It took months to heal, but the physical therapy that I did made a huge amount of difference in how I feel this year and so getting the healing happening and then figuring out how to change the dynamics of how I exercised so that I am not running injured this year made all the difference. Hang in there and I hope all will go well with your healthy. Thanks for your blog!
