The Stories We Tell

with 4 comments

Captivating Stories full of drama, peppered with intrigue and maybe even laced with some boredom.

Every time someone asks “How are you” and you end up going on and on about all the things that are going wrong and dramatic in your life instead of being happy with where you are, that’s your Story.

Every time you talk yourself out of doing something that you really want to do out of fear for what someone else might think, that’s your Story.

Every time you get caught up in the conversation happening in your head and miss out on what’s going on right now in the moment, that’s your Story.

Every time you stress about some situation that might happen in the future or happened in the past, that’s your Story.

Stories as we usually think of them are great to tell our kids or for entertainment-value along with some popcorn at your local theater, but the Stories I’m talking about are not that kind of thing.

The Stories I am talking about are the things we tell ourselves over and over that make us think we can’t or shouldn’t really live up to our true nature.

It’s time to get rid of those Stories.

Your Story Will Take You Out

with one comment

We all have our stories. Some of these stories give us strength. Other are draining. Most of them are the later not the former.

Our stories will take us out, if we let them. They will take us out of what we really want in life. They will take us out of the situations that help us to grow. They will come to the fore even faster than we can think. They grow over time and become further entrenched until it is hard to distinguish who we really are from the stories we tell about ourselves.

Our stories ultimately provide our mind with a rationale for why we are not in good physical shape, smart, successful, in a happy relationship, financially secure or otherwise living up to our dreams.

Our stories are a crutch.

Start taking note when you start “explaining” to someone why you aren’t doing something are being in a manner that you know you should be doing/being. Chances are your story is rearing it’s head. The more you can become aware of your stories, the less energy you’ll be feeding to them. The less you feed them, the less of a grip they will eventually hold over you.

Stop watering your plants and they will eventually die. Stop feeding your stories and the same will happen to them.

Once your stories drop away, you’ll be living a life that is authentic, and in tune to the person you really are.

The Stories We Tell

Think of the last time you made an excuse for why you couldn’t, wouldn’t or shouldn’t do something.

It is in those moments that you are getting caught up in your stories about why things won’t work out. Too short, too fat, too poor, too busy, too young, too old, etc. The stories have little to no basis in fact, other than the fact that you made them up, but they govern your life all the same.

It is just so much easier to explain away something and justify why it can’t be done, than to venture a chance at it and risk your ego getting a little hurt.

The paradox of all this is that the very stories that you create to defend yourself are the same stories that  preventing you from truly living. That is to say, they keep you from experiencing life in the moment, and growing, learning and truly contributing beyond your means.

Learn to identify your stories when they arise. It is the first step in creating space between who you really are and what your ego says you are. Over time, the stories will lose their grip and the real you will shine through.
